Top Dress Shopping Tips for Mother of the Bride

05.07.21

In need of a Mother of the Bride Gown? Read along for essential tips that will have you prepared and ready to shop!

Daymor

The Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom are vital members that attribute to the wedding day. They host several of the events surrounding the wedding activities. You will be the center of attention when you walk down the aisle, are introduced at the reception, and greeting the guests. It is important that you are represented well and that you feel beautiful on the wedding day!

Do Not Wait Last Minute!

One mistake made often is looking for your dress too late. Typically, one should start searching for a dress 3 to 4 months in advance before the wedding. It will allow lead time for shipping and alterations needed. Keep in mind the pandemic has caused some delays with purchase orders, which is another reason to plan ahead of time. Searching for a dress earlier will help ease the stress of finding the perfect one.

Before you Shop

Before you go shopping, get an idea of what the bride would prefer you wear. She might want you to coordinate a dress that matches her wedding colors or have a particular style of dress that complements the bridal party. Make sure to appropriately dress to accommodate for location, weather, and dress code. For example, you should not show up in casual attire if it is for a formal wedding at Knotting Hill. Also, be sure to contact the Mother-of-the-Groom before you shop so she knows what to buy.

At StarDust Celebrations, we carry a range of couture evening gowns from designers such as Daymor Couture, Montage by Mon Cheri, Fouy Chov, and many more. Whether you are classic in style, traditional, or a bit edgy we have it for you. Come visit our flagship location in Plano, Texas and one of our expert stylists will help find the style you need!

Tell us about your proposal…

We vacationed in Edinburgh, Scotland, and it was three days after the anniversary of our first date. Ron asked me to put on a nice dress because we were going to a nice dinner to celebrate our anniversary. However, he did not tell me was that we were going to take a detour through a park that Edinburgh Castle overlooks. I thought Ron was crazy because of the rain, but we got an umbrella from a souvenir shop, and it the location turned out to be gorgeous. He brought me to a stunningly ornate fountain, with the castle in the background, and there was a woman nearby taking photographs. He asked the woman if she would mind taking our photo, and she agreed. Ron handed her his phone and then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him in the rain. The woman quickly whipped out her professional camera and took pictorial evidence that the fairytale proposal was real. I obviously said “Yes!” right away!

What Made Your Dress the One?

Growing up my dream dress was the one that my grandmother wore on her wedding day. It had long sleeves, a full skirt and was stunning in its simplicity. It reminded me of a dress that Audrey Hepburn would wear, and I have always loved the classic and minimalistic style of the 50s and 60s. Unfortunately, the dress was preserved incorrectly, so it was not an option. When I saw my dress at StarDust Celebrations (it was the first one that Marianne showed me), I immediately knew that it was the modern version of my grandmother’s dress! It had the beauty of simplicity, with a modern and sexy twist! As cliché as it sounds, I felt like a princess from the moment I walked out of the dressing room and saw myself in the mirror.  It also helped that it made my mother cry every time I tried it on.

What was your dress shopping experience like at StarDust Celebrations?

Fantastic does not even begin to describe my experience shopping for dresses at StarDust Celebrations. Marianne pretty much took one look at me, asked a few questions, and immediately knew what dress I would love and look fabulous wearing. She was my real-life fairy godmother. She made me feel taken care of, very special, and made the process a breeze! I was afraid I would spend months looking for my dress, and within minutes of our appointment, Marianne found the perfect dress for me! Also, the alterations staff were amazing, detailed, and gifted at their craft.

What was your theme on your wedding day?

Our theme was “Nerdy Romantic!” Ron and I are huge self-proclaimed nerds, and we spent our first date talking about all our different fandoms, trading The Simpsons quotes, and ranking Harry Potter books and the Star Wars movies. We knew our wedding had to reflect us while still holding on to the classical romance of the day, of course.

What was special about your big day?

I have two answers to this! The first is finally getting to say, “I do!” Our wedding got postponed for two months due to the pandemic, and we were just so excited to finally get married. My other answer is the first look Ron, and I did. It was so nice to have a private moment together before the ceremony, spend a few minutes chatting, and seeing each other with barely anyone there since the rest of the day was a whirlwind. I also love the stunned look on his face when he saw me in my dress for the first time!

What personalized details went into your wedding?

We personalized our wedding by adding small, subtle nerdy details throughout our reception. Each table had a specific fandom couple associated with it and small decorations to match, such as Ron and Hermione from Harry Potter, Han and Leia from Star Wars, and Luke and Lorelai from Gilmore Girls. We also had a wall-hanging guest book shaped like the Millennium Falcon where guests could write their name on a heart and drop it in. The best, however, was the Groom’s cake, carved to be Chewbacca wearing the Sorting Hat.

Two Looks On Your Wedding Day

03.25.21

You have dreamt about your wedding dress ever since you were little. Maybe you have envisioned a glamorous ball gown, a conservative, classic look, or a lacey A-line that truly captures your Pinterest goals. You go to your style appointment to try on numerous gowns and narrowed it down to two. Your heart is breaking because you cannot decide which one to choose. One dress captures your sweet and romantic side while the other one brings the dazzle you want for your reception. We have a solution to save all that stress by just choosing both! Create the best of both worlds by wearing two looks. A decision you will not regret!

Benefits of Two Dresses

Having two wedding dresses on your wedding is a great way to show off your personality and leave a lasting impression. It sets the tone for the ceremony and gives creative room for your reception. Also, it allows you to honor any religious or cultural beliefs during the ceremony, but you can still be yourself during the reception. Comfort is an important factor, so choose a loose dress to eliminate any frustrations with mobility, especially on the dance floor.  A long sleeve elegant look for your ceremony may satisfy any religious customs, whereas a lightweight silk dress with beaded spaghetti straps may be perfect for a reception full of dancing. Another terrific reason to hop on the two-look train is to accommodate for weather or location changes. Having the luxury of versatility can be your best friend on your big day.

Still wanting to get that two-look attire on your wedding day but need to save money for other wedding essentials. A wonderful option is to buy one gown, but you can add layering pieces like a detachable overskirt or a beautiful capelet. Adding details and accessories creates the same effect, and still stays within your budget.

Shopping Tips for the Busty Bride

10.10.20

How to Shop for a Wedding Dress as a Busty Bride

We regularly get asked on our Instagram and Facebook often how to shop for wedding dresses as a busty bride. Finally, the wait is over! We spoke to our bridal consultants and expert alterations staff to learn how to approach shopping for your special day as a busty bride, and these are the tips you definitely don’t want to miss. Get the scoop, below.

Think about strap options.

Definitely explore styles with straps thick enough to cover your bra straps! This way, you’ll have extra support and no one will even know. Cap sleeves are a great option here too. Keep in mind, while a spaghetti strap might look nice, the weight of your bust might make these skinny straps dig into your shoulders. Stiffer strap fabrics (think satin, crepe, etc.) will also provide extra support, while fabrics like delicate mesh will not.

Perfect dress options with straps:

Pronovias Orobia Gown

Robert Bullock Avril Gown

Opt for styles with a higher back.

Dresses with raised backs or corsets make great options for a  busty brides. This way, a bra can be worn without it being seen, plus a corset can be adjusted as needed for extra support.

Our favorite high backed dresses:

Sottero & Midgley Kevyn Gown

Martin Thornburg 119255 Gown

Don’t count out an illusion neckline as a busty bride!

While some might think sheer illusion in the bodice would be off limits for a bigger chest, fear no more! If you’re totally in love with the look of illusion, we say “yes”—just keep in mind you’ll need to wear a skin colored bra for some secret support. Depending on the level of illusion or cut outs, your alterations manager might suggest filling in these areas with lace, lining or detailing to accommodate undergarments. Keep in mind, customization fees may apply here.

Our favorite illusion dresses:

Haley Paige Effie Gown

Badgley Mischka Cayenne Gown

Think about bust-friendly necklines.

If you’re not wild about cleavage, there are great bust-friendly necklines out there for you! Instead of a more revealing v-neckline, try a bateau neckline or a pretty off-the shoulder look. Both of these styles can incorporate a strapless bra to give you the support you need, but still show off your décolletage.

Our favorite chest flattering gowns:

Allison Webb Ava Gown

Sassi Holford Astrid Gown

The options are truly endless when it comes to finding the perfect gown for you! Of course, if you’re dream gown isn’t listen, or is missing one of these features- don’t fret! Trust that you’ll be in good hands when you arrive for your appointment at StarDust!
